JEDI Presents: The Inclusive Power of Storytelling

Aidan's Justice, Equality, Diversity, and Inclusivity Committee (JEDI) is hosting a virtual event on Thursday, May 13, 2021, from 7pm to 8pm, entitled, The Inclusive Power of Storytelling: a performance-based approach to community building

During this event, Armando Batista, Poet, Performer and Educator, will perform a spoken-word piece inspired by his childhood community, then analyze it to show how telling a personal story begins to uncover the untold story of a city and its inhabitants. Later, Armando will facilitate an activity to help attendees begin their own personal and inclusive storytelling. Finally, he will provide resources (books, podcasts, films) to help expand on the ideas from the program. JEDI invites all members of the Aidan community to join us for vibrant discussion and experience. This event is geared toward adults and we ask that anyone planning to attend, please RSVP.

ARTIST-EDUCATOR BIO:

Armando Batista is a poet, performer and educator. The child of Dominican immigrants, he was born and raised in Washington Heights, NY. Armando earned his M.F.A. in Writing from Vermont College of Fine Arts, and a B.A. in Theater from Temple University. He has written and performed two solo plays, and co-created other theatrical works. He has taught English, ESL, solo performance, storytelling, activism, clowning, poetry and improvisation to learners from ages 3 to 73.

He is currently working on a poetry collection, and developing a trauma-informed clown improvisational piece. He recently taught an online poetry class at Politics and Prose, a D.C. independent bookstore, and will be teaching summer courses to middle and high school students at Pacific Ridge School in California.
