Upper School Blog: Reading at Home

Reading is an essential skill that serves as a foundation and gateway for all other learning. When children are exposed to reading at an early age, they not only develop their literacy skills but also strengthen their critical thinking, problem-solving, and communication skills. Reading books regularly fosters the growth of a child’s imagination, creativity, and curiosity. Reading at home daily is crucial for a child's development and caregivers should encourage children to read independently or read aloud to emerging readers on a daily basis.

Daily reading at home has proven to dramatically expand a child's vocabulary and their ability to understand complex concepts and ideas. This is especially true for young children who are still developing expressive language. Daily reading helps children not only learn new words but also improves their grammar, sentence structure, fluency, and ability to express themselves.

Reading also has a positive impact on adolescent cognitive development. Research has shown that reading enhances brain connectivity and neural activity, especially in areas associated with language and imagination. Reading also improves concentration and memory, which are both essential skills for academic success and executive functioning.

In addition to the cognitive and creative benefits of reading, daily reading can also improve a child’s emotional well-being. Reading books helps children develop empathy and emotional intelligence by exposing them to different characters and situations. Books help children identify with and understand different emotions and perspectives which can help them develop healthy relationships with others. Reading can also help children relax and destress—especially before bed, which can help children sleep better and feel more rested.

To encourage children to read at home daily, caregivers can start making reading a part of their daily routine. Set aside a specific time each day for reading (such as before bed or after dinner) or create a cozy reading corner with comfortable seating and a selection of books to choose from. Caregivers can also model positive reading behaviors themselves!

Daily reading at home is perhaps the most effective way to foster a child’s academic success in school and should be encouraged for children of all ages and reading levels.
