Dear Aidan Families,
It is with immense pleasure and excitement that I am able to invite you to join me for an in-person event celebrating art this spring! The Evening of the Arts has been a long-standing tradition at Aidan, but because we went two years without one I know there are many of you who are unfamiliar with this celebration.
We host the Evening of the Arts each May and I spend the whole year looking forward to that time when I get to cover the school in art, meet you all on the front steps, and spend the night admiring, discussing, and celebrating the children’s creative work (and even making some art too)! Every Aidan child from Toddler through Upper Elementary is represented in our exhibition, and after they have shown you their work there is also a scavenger hunt to do, and crafts for them to make on the black top.
So please join me on Friday, May 6 (New Date) from 5:00-7:00 PM for our Evening of the Arts: A Universe of Wonder.
I love that word—wonder. It is a perfect word to describe what I observe the children experience as they engage in creative work. Not just the surprise and delight as they discover the endless possibilities of the materials before them, or the pleasure they derive from each others’ imaginations, but the wonder of discovering things about themselves along the way.
A student came to me recently and proudly exclaimed, “I’m surprised that I’m so good at art!” There was genuine admiration and wonder in their voice. They had discovered that not only did they love the creative process, but also that they had skills and perspectives they were just beginning to understand and they couldn’t wait to explore this new universe of possibility within themselves.
Come explore some art with me and experience some wonder yourself as we celebrate this fundamental, important, and fun part of the learning process. The children always enjoy not only sharing their work, but getting to see work from all levels.
If you would like to engage in a little creative work yourself and help me prepare for the event, I will be hosting two opportunities for parents to volunteer to help me make this wonderful event a reality. Please join me—there is a lot of art to prepare and present!
The two opportunities for parent volunteers are:
- Thursday, April 28, 8:30-11:30 AM: Coffee, pastries, and art prep at the Annex. We will be matting artwork and preparing other materials for the event.
- Thursday, May 5, 8:30 AM-2:30 PM: Hanging artwork at school. We will be spending the day putting up artwork around the school to prepare for the exhibition.
Here are some important specifics about Evening of the Arts: A Universe of Wonder on Friday, May 6 from 5:00 - 7:00 PM:
- This event will only be open to current students, parents, and siblings.
- Visiting hours will be staggered by level:
- 5:00-6:00 PM: Toddler & Primary families
- 6:00-7:00 PM: Elementary families
- May 6 will now be a regular school day (no all school dismissal at 11:15 AM as noted on the printed calendar); however, there will be no ASP on this day and all students must be picked up by 4:00 PM.
This will be our first in-person event on campus with both children and adults in over two years, and we look forward to our continued shift back to our normal programing. The children are already getting excited about preparing and putting on our exhibition and I hope we see you there!
For those of you who cannot attend, or if your child would like to share their work with someone who can’t be there, we will be including a virtual gallery as part of the celebration as we have done for the past two years. A link to the virtual show will be sent out to families, grandparents, and special persons closer to the day of the event.
