Children's books set in a city apartment building are always fun because of the naturally diverse cast of characters residing and working there. An older series by Odo Hirsch is a great example of this, about the spunky heroine Hazel Green who regularly visits all the shopkeepers on the first floor of her building. A new book, The Goat by Anne Fleming, is another wonderful example. The main character is Kid, a girl recently arrived in New York City with her parents, but we also get to read viewpoints of other residents of Kid's building.

The book's title comes from the rumored existence of a goat on the roof of the building, and Kid and her new friend Will go on a quest to find out whether this is true. The narrated histories of the various residents intertwine and the story comes to an exciting conclusion.

I won't tell you whether or not Kid and Will find a goat! But this premise for a story is fun either way.

This book is good for ages 9 to 12.
