Aunty Aidan: On Weather and Worries
Aunty Aidan: On Weather and Worries

Dear Aunty Aidan,

My weather app alarm went off the other day, frightening my child, who is now anxious about floods. How can I quiet his fears?

Regretful

Dear Regretful,

Protecting childhood's innocence is becoming increasing more difficult with each passing day and each report of the latest disaster. As the adults in the room, you must filter out the sensationalism and the noise (see last month's column and turn off those alerts) that children hear - from you, from the media, even from other children. They are far too young (yes, even many a 12 year old) to comprehend issues outside their experience and will take their cues to worry directly from you.

It is your responsibility, therefore, to reinforce that the world is full of hope and promise and that you will do your best to protect them. You demonstrate that for them by validating their feelings, acting with compassion, and framing explanations in a developmentally appropriate manner. Mr. Rogers said, "Always look for the helpers." If you follow that mantra, you'll ease your child's distress and you'll have little to regret.
