Aunty Aidan: On Great Gift Giving
Aunty Aidan: On Great Gift Giving

Dear Aunty Aidan,

What suggestions do you have for gifting this season? The relatives are asking for ideas.

The Unsure Elf

Dear Unsure,

The holiday season brings out the gift-giver in each of us; we want to show our love by showering our children with just the right presents. Consider toys and implements that are open-ended: anything that requires "kid-action" will lead to further exploration and provide for hours of concentration and discovery.

A real rake, a Swiffer, an actual baking set, and tools that are sharp enough to work will offer opportunities to participate in daily family life. A magnifying glass and flashlight will encourage the scientist; stamp pad set and colored ink pads could inspire the decorator. The collector needs boxes, labels and files and a young walker will find a wheelbarrow a challenge. Puzzles enhance spatial skills, blocks inspire the architect, and a set of rhythm instruments and pretty scarves will set the budding musician to free-form dancing. The poet will treasure a diary, journal and some fancy pens. Ah, books – to read and to be heard – should always be a staple on any gift list. For great books for all ages, check out this recommendation list from Aidan's very own librarian!

Forward this information to the relatives and you'll be Elf Extraordinaire.
