Geoffrey Chaucer, author of the Canterbury Tales, is connected to this day's current association with romantic love, which transformed a minor religious holiday in the 14th century. The first time anyone signed any sort of correspondence with "Your Valentine" may have been when the Christian saint for whom this holiday was named wrote a thank you note to the daughter of his jailer.
